WASTE - DOT TRAINING
QUESTION - Do your employees handle, package, label, load, unload, or create shipping documents for hazardous materials or hazardous waste shipments?
If so, they are defined as a HAZMAT employee and must receive training according to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and
for California businesses the California Environmental Protection Agency (CAL-EPA).
DOT enforces requlations and issues penalties:
cilvil penalty: up $32,000 per day, per violation
criminal penalty: up to $500,000.00 per day and possible jail time
Every HAZMAT employee who handles or directly affect the safety of hazardous materials and hazardous waste shipments must be trained within 90 days of their employment and every 3-years thereafter.
We make the training “come alive” by customizing your training manuals and class examples to cover only the hazardous materials and hazardous wastes handled at your facility at no additional charge.
Life Safety eliminates the time spent on training “fluff” and only covers the essential training information that will be used and retained by your employees. A final portion of the class will include walking your employees through your facility and applying the training they just learned to “their world” while looking for ways to improve their compliance.
Specifically, this training will include:
- Using the DOT Hazardous Materials Table;
- Preparing and tracking shipping papers including Hazardous Waste Manifests;
- Packaging;
- Marking;
- Labeling;
- Inspecting;
- Placarding the transport vehicle; and
- Final walk through of your facility.
Each participant will receive a detailed course manual and be given a short quiz at the end of the course to document comprehension of the training material. Each participant passing the quiz will be provided a certificate of training for the course.
The Hazardous Waste and DOT Training Course is in full compliance with DOT, EPA, and CAL-EPA laws and regulations for hazardous materials and hazardous waste shipments including:
- Title 49, U.S. Code, Section 5101 et. seq.
- Title 49, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Sections 172.704 and 173.1(b);
- Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Section 262; and
- Title 22, California Code of Regulations, Section
66262
Our content experts
will assist your company in maintaining compliance with the Hazardous Waste and DOT laws and regulations; and thereby, significantly reducing the potential for:
- Regulatory fines and violations;
- Fires;
- Chemical spills and reactions;
- Chemical exposures;
- Work related injuries;
- Loss work time;
- Insurance claims; and
- Potential litigation.
We at Life Safety strive to create partnerships with our

First responders at the "Awareness"
level are individuals who are likely to witness or discover a hazardous substance release
and who have been trained to initiate an emergency response sequence by notifying the
proper authorities of the release.
They would take no further action beyond
notifying the authorities of the release. First responders at the awareness level shall
have sufficient training or have had sufficient experience to objectively demonstrate
competency in the following areas:
- An understanding of what hazardous substances are
and the risks associated with them in an incident.
- An understanding of the potential outcomes
associated with an emergency created when hazardous substances are present.
- The ability to recognize the presence of
hazardous substances in an emergency.
- The ability to identify the hazardous substances,
if possible.
- An understanding of the role of the
first-responder awareness individual in the employer's emergency response plan including
site security and control and the U.S. Department of Transportation's Emergency Response
Guidebook.
- The ability to realize the need for additional

substances as part of the initial response to the site for the purpose of protecting life,
environment and property from the effects of the release.
They are trained to respond in a defensive
fashion without actually trying to stop the release. Their function is to contain the
release from a safe distance without contacting the chemical. They are trained to keep the
chemical from spreading and to prevent exposures.
First responders at the operational level shall
have received training and have sufficient experience to objectively demonstrate
competency in the following areas in addition to those listed for the Awareness level:
- Knowledge of the basic hazard and risk-assessment
techniques.
- Know how to select and use proper personal
protective equipment (PPE/CPC) provided to the first-responder operational level.
- Have an understanding of basic
hazardous-materials terms.
- Knowledge of chemicals hazards, toxicology,
markings, labels and placards.

and/or confinement operations within the capabilities of the resources and personal
protective equipment (PPE/CPC) available.
- Know how to implement basic decontamination
procedures.
- Have an understanding of the relevant standard
operating procedures and termination procedures.

Assumes a more aggressive role than an FRO in
that they approach the point of release in order to plug, patch or otherwise stop the
release of hazardous substance.
For most companies It is
recommended that each student receives 40 hours
of training.
Federal regulations require a minimum of 24 hours of "Technician"
training. For some companies 24 hours of training is suitable. This is all based on your risk potential, type
and amount of chemicals, etc. Please call or Email for recommendations.
Upon completion, the "Technician" must have training equal to the FRO and show competency in the
following areas:
- Know how to implement your company's emergency
response plan.
- Know the classification, identification and
verification of known and unknown materials by using field survey instruments and
equipment.
- Be able to function with an assigned role in the
ICS.
- Select and use proper specialized chemical
PPE/CPC.

Respirator Medical Clearance Exam
Life Safety Associates on-site testing adheres to all OSHA/NIOSH requirements that are listed in the 1910.134 1998 Respiratory Protection Standard up-date. The standard states that "using a respirator may place a physiological burden on employees that varies with the type of respirator worn, the job, and workplace conditions in which the respirator is used, and the medical status of the employee. The employer may discontinue an employee's medical evaluations when the employee is no longer required to use a respirator." The Physician or Licensed Health Care Professional (PLHCP) who conducts the examination has discretion to determine the tests, consultations, and diagnostic procedures to be included in the examination. Given this discretion on the part of the PLHCP, and the PLHCP's awareness of the considerable physiological burden that the respirator places on the user, OSHA believes that the PLHCP will be able to evaluate the employee's ability for the use of a respirator.
On-Site Testing Medical Clearance Evaluation includes the following:
- Questionnaire 1910.134 '98 up-date
- Prescreen Medical Questionnaire
- Blood Pressure ¨ Resting
- EKG - Resting (Recommended ¨ additional charge will apply)
- Height and Weight
- Pulmonary Function Test
- Physician Over-Read of Data Medical Clearance Statement
- Trend Analysis (at no additional charge)
- Archiving of Data
