Summer is the season of sunshine, vacations, and outdoor fun. It’s a time to relax, explore, and enjoy the warmth. But with rising temperatures, it’s also important to stay safe and hydrated.
So this week we are dishing on the essentials of summer safety, sharing personal experiences, and offering expert advice on how to handle the heat.
Let’s start with heat emergencies. Recognizing early signs is crucial. It starts with simple heat rashes and can escalate to heat exhaustion and heat stroke if not addressed promptly. For instance, working outside in the sun can cause a heat rash, which looks like acne and appears in areas like the underarms and back. At this stage, it’s essential to drink lots of water and electrolyte-rich beverages like Gatorade or Pedialyte.
Our personal favorite is to mix half Gatorade and half water! This reduces your sugar and salt intake while still getting the benefits of *both* the Gatorade and water. Win-Win!
Next up… cooling methods. Because this week half the country is practically melting! Cold showers, ice packs, and air conditioning are effective ways to cool down and do make a significant difference in your body temp. Even just finding some shade can be a huge help. If air conditioning isn’t available, wetting your skin and wearing loose, light-colored clothing can help too.
Ice packs in your armpits? We know it sounds silly… but it works! And a cool wet cloth on your neck can also rapidly reduce body temperature. Are ready for another? It’s called the “taco method”. Yes, the “taco method”. We think it sounds funny too. It involves wrapping a person in a wet tarp or blanket and lifting it to enhance cooling through evaporation. If you’ve ever tried this method we’d love to hear how went!
